This year we celebrated the 14th annual Bill Yarlott Fishing Derby. It is a celebration for the beginning of fishing season and a rite of passage for kids. This year we had about 20 kids come out in the typical over cast cool shades of spring. Thanks to Phillip Miller everyone enjoyed some hot coffee, cocoa and delicious pancakes! Thanks to our local sponsors who provided some fantastic prizes too
The fishing derby is named after Bill because he was instrumental in getting Cascade Lake stocked when fish numbers began to decline. He was also influential in getting the first hatchery up and running. Philip Miller has worked along side Bill for many years and continues with the tradition for the kids and Friends of Moran. This year they’ll be flippin pancakes, brewing some coffee and stiring up come hot cocoa while counting and identifying the fish caught. Kids can hope to catch Kokanne, Cuttthroat and Rainbow trout from Cascade Lake. Everyone gets a prize.
The event is co-sponsored with Orcas Outfitters in Eastsound and Kings Marine in Friday Harbor. Friends of Moran is honored to have their participation and greatful for the generous donations for prizes.
